Lance Armstrong: American Hero or Traitor to Sports?

This week, Lance Armstrong admitted to taking performance enhancing drugs on Oprah Winfrey’s show. Many people who analyzed the sport of cycling suspected that Armstrong had been using these for some time. People have essentially written Lance Armstrong off as a hero to sports. I am not one of these people. While steroids are prohibited, sometimes people have to use them for injuries. I think that the primary reason that he used performance enhancers to get over an injury. I will always consider Lance Armstrong one of the most talented athletes of all time. He has the drive, and the perseverance to prevail after many illnesses and injuries. That is why Lance Armstrong will always be one of my heroes.

Linsanity: Lasting or a Trend?

Over the last couple of weeks, Jeremy Lin of the New York Knicks has been dazzling the world with his amazing play. He has been lighting up Madison Square Garden, leading the Knicks in comebacks, and all of the basketball world has been buzzing about this. But the question is will this last, or is it just another story for the media to buzz about? With his many assists and multiple 20 point games, I think that this could last. I like the way that Lin plays, and I think that he is more oriented on helping his team win. If you look at Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire’s numbers in the last couple of games, they have been good if not great.
So do I think this Linderella story will continue?
Yes, I do and I think the Knicks made a good investment in Jeremy Lin.

The Arrow or the Indian?

In every sport, there is a discussion about whether your equipment helps factor in your performance.  In baseball for instance, people say that composite bats help Little Leaguer’s performance.  Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox once said “It ain’t the arrow, it’s the Indian.”  This means that it isn’t the equipment, it is the player using the equipment.  In my opinion, I think that this is true in all sports except for one.  I think that the equipment matters in golf.  If you have bad clubs in golf, you will shank shots left and right.  In golf, equipment does matter.  Sam’s opinion is with all the new metals that they are using for baseball bats and golf clubs, the equipment will become a bigger and bigger part of the game.

Life’s Rich Pageant

Today my question to all of you is do you think it is better to play only one sport and be spectacular at it or play multiple sports and be good but not the best at them. Me, being a multiple sport child, I believe that it is better to be well rounded and play multiple sports. But I have a lot of friends who only play one sport and they are exceedingly good at that sport and I am always trying to catch up to them. But then you would not as well rounded and you would have that to put on your resume. In my opinion I would rather play multiple sports and be not the best, but still good at them instead of playing one sport and being phenomenal at it.

Is there too much greed in professional sports?

Is there too much greed in pro sports? With two lockouts in the mix right now, it has been said that pro athletes are too greedy. Players make millions of dollars every year, and now NBA and NFL players want more money. That sounds pretty greedy, considering that they already make so much money.

The NFL lockout is almost over, so that means that the NFL players will be satisfied with the money they are making. The NBA lockout could last until the beginning of the season. That means that there could be no NBA season next year.

I think there is too much greed in pro sports. The fact that two of the four major sports in the USA are locked out shows that the players are money hungry. I hope that the lockouts end as soon as possible.

Personal Performance or Team Success?

Would you rather be on a weak team but perform phenomenally, or be part of a great team but your performance is mediocre? There are advantages and disadvantages either way.

There are multiple pros to having good personal performance and weak team performance. One pro would be you would play well and you would always look good while your on the field or court. Another is you would always feel good about your performance. Some cons are your team is bad and they don’t win a lot.

There are also pros to having team success and mediocre personal performance. Some pros would be you are on a victorious team and you would be recognized for being on that team. Some cons would be you would not be satisfied with your own performance and you could get less playing time.

If I had to choose to have good team or personal performance, I would choose personal. Because if you have good personal performance, you could lift your team up and make them strive to do better.

Sports in Hollywood: What is the best sports movie of all time?

Hollywood has made some brilliant sports movies, some more famous than others. There were the more famous ones like Field of Dreams and The Longest Yard. There are also the less famous like Caddyshack 2. My question to all of you is which is your favorite sports movie and why? My favorite would have to be either Happy Gilmore or The Longest Yard with Adam Sandler. I like those movies because they are enjoyable comedies with good stories and funny punchlines. Other people do not enjoy that kind of humor. The prefer feel good stories like Secretariat or Remember the Titans. I like those movies too, but I prefer comedies like The Longest Yard and Happy Gilmore.

Boring Sports: Which sport is the most boring to watch on TV?

While there are some very enjoyable sports to watch, there are some very dull ones too. My question to all of you is which one do you think is the most boring. In my opinion, the most boring would be one of the minor ones such as cricket. Other people think that baseball and soccer are particularly boring. It is really just a matter of opinion. Some people think that basketball is boring. Some also think that tennis is boring. In my opinion, I think that bowling is the most boring.

Isner vs. Mahut Rematch: Was it purposeful or coincidental?

At last year’s Wimbledon, the longest match in recorded tennis history occurred between John Isner of the USA and Nicolas Mahut of France. The final score of the match was 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-3), 70-68 in favor of Isner. Ironically, in this year’s Wimbledon pairings, Isner drew Mahut for the second year in a row. The results were far from the same. In this year’s Isner still won. He defeated Mahut 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) in straight sets. A lot of people thought of this pairing as purposeful so that they see a repeat of the entertainment of that match. I watched the people draw the names out of the hat so I do not believe that it was purposeful. I think that it was pure coincidence that they drew each other.
